Fairleigh Dickinson University
STUDENT HEALTH INSURANCE PLAN

2024-2025 Academic Year

Health Insurance

In keeping with its institutional responsibility to protect the health and well-being of the students, as well as meeting the requirements under New Jersey state law, Fairleigh Dickinson University (FDU) requires that all eligible students carry health insurance. Eligible students are automatically charged for the FDU Student Health Insurance Plan premium. Online only students are not eligible for the insurance. Students are responsible for submitting a health insurance waiver online prior to the deadline date if they do not want/need the student health insurance plan.

The following students are required to have health insurance that meets University requirements:

Plan Highlights

The Student Health Insurance Plan will continue to be provided by UnitedHealthcare. The plan complies with the Affordable Care Act benefit requirements and includes access to UnitedHealthcare Choice Plus Network. Students do not have to select a primary care physician and referrals are not required. You can view the Benefit Summary located under Benefit Information in the left-hand side navigation menu.

Waiver Process

Students required to have health insurance who wish to waive (opt-out):

  • Must provide proof of alternative coverage by completing the online waiver prior to the deadline date. You may waive by clicking on Waiver Form in the left-hand side navigation menu.
  • Copies of your insurance card submitted to the Student Wellness Services, Athletics Department, etc. do not constitute a waiver and are not acceptable.
  • Students who do not complete a waiver by the deadline date will be automatically enrolled in the plan for the full academic year and will be responsible for the full cost. The waiver form must be completed each academic year. Late waivers will not be accepted.

Enrollment Process

Eligible students who wish to enroll in the Health Insurance:

  • Students are encouraged to enroll in the student health insurance plan as soon as possible, so they may have access to coverage when the plan year begins. You may enroll by clicking on Enrollment Form in the left-hand side navigation menu.
  • If you confirm enrollment in the health insurance plan, you are financially responsible for the full amount of the health insurance premium for the duration of the policy effective dates.

Please note: Online only, part-time and non-matriculating students are not eligible to enroll.

International Students

International students are automatically enrolled and charged for the Fairleigh Dickinson University Student Health Insurance Plan. If an international student has a plan that is filed and approved in the United States that complies with the ACA benefit requirements, then the student may complete the online waiver form. Proof of other insurance that meets the waiver requirements is required and will be reviewed prior to the waiver being approved.

Please note, health insurance plans marketed solely to international students are often not filed and approved in the U.S., have limited benefits, provider networks and/or coverage periods that do not comply with the Fairleigh Dickinson insurance requirements. GBG Insurance, HDL Global Specialty, ISO, PGH (United), PSI, Student Medicover, and Tata AIG are examples of companies that do not meet the waiver requirements.

Important Notes

FDU reserves the right to audit all waivers in order to ensure compliance with the university insurance requirements. Please be sure to have a copy of your insurance policy as you may be asked to provide documentation.

Qualifying Event

Students who waive the insurance in the fall may not enroll in the spring semester. Students who waive are eligible to enroll if there is a Qualifying Life Event which causes them to lose other insurance. Please contact University Health Plans to enroll within 31 days of the qualifying life event.
