SHIP Highlights

The SHIP is an ACA-compliant plan insured by Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina (BCBSNC) and includes access to their national PPO network. Additional plan information is located on the left side of this page.

Enrollment Process

International students on an F or J Visa are automatically enrolled in the plan, no action is required to enroll. Students can access the ID card via the link on the left side of this page.

Domestic students are automatically charged for the SHIP. Domestic student information is not transferred to BCBSNC until the enrollment form is submitted. Students should submit an enrollment form as soon as possible to avoid difficulties accessing their health insurance benefits. Approximately four business days after the enrollment form is submitted, the student can access the insurance ID card via the link on the left side of this page. Note: If an enrollment or waiver form is not submitted by the deadline, students are enrolled in the SHIP to the policy effective date and are responsible for the insurance premium.

Waiver Process

Students with comparable health insurance may submit a waiver form by the deadline to opt-out. To be considered comparable, your plan must:

  • Be filed and approved in the US and compliant with the Affordable Care Act (ACA)
  • Provide comprehensive insured, non-emergency benefits for doctors, specialists, hospitals, labs, pharmacies, and behavioral health providers in the geographical area surrounding the school

See the waiver form on the left for additional waiver criteria.

Eligibility

Students will be terminated and refunded if they do not meet the eligibility or do not attend classes for the first 31 days of the semester.

Spring Termination

Students who do not return for the Spring semester are automatically terminated from the SHIP at the end of the Fall coverage period. Students who are re-enrolled for Spring may request termination of the Spring coverage period by submitting the Spring termination form by the deadline.

Qualifying Life Events

Students who waived the SHIP may not voluntarily enroll during the policy year. However, students may qualify for special enrollment rights if they have a qualifying life event, such as losing former coverage. The qualifying life event enrollment form on the left requires supporting documentation and payment and must be submitted within 31 days of losing other coverage.
