STUDENT HEALTH INSURANCE PLAN

2024-2025 Academic Year
Spring Waiver Form

To be considered comparable, your plan must be filed and approved in the U.S. and be compliant with the Affordable Care Act (ACA). Provide comprehensive, non-emergency benefits in the geographical area surrounding the school.

Generally, only plans acquired through U.S. employment or purchased from the local state marketplaces will be filed and approved in the U.S. and compliant with the ACA. Plans that do not meet the above requirement include short-term medical plans, healthcare sharing plans, insurance plans from foreign healthcare systems, travel plans, and plans marketed to international students only. Examples of plans marketed to international students that do not meet the requirements include GBG Insurance, HDL Global Specialty, ISO, Tigerless, PGH (United), PSI, Student Medicover, and Tata AIG.

Not all U.S. health plans provide national coverage, and many out-of-state HMO, EPO, and Medicaid plans will not provide comprehensive non-emergency benefits in the geographical area surrounding the school.

  • Students covered by out-of-state HMO or EPO plans should contact their insurance company and apply for an away-from-home rider. Most insurance companies offer these riders for students studying away from home. If you have an HMO or EPO plan from a state other than PA, NJ, or DE and do not have an away-from-home rider extending your coverage to PA, you cannot waive.

  • Students insured by NJ or DE Medicaid should be aware that most Medicaid plans do not provide comprehensive non-emergency services outside of the home state. Students with NJ or DE Medicaid can waive with their out-of-state plan but are responsible for finding and/or traveling to providers in their network.

  • Students insured by Medicaid from states other than PA, NJ, or DE cannot waive with their out-of-state Medicaid.

  • Students insured by Medicaid from PA should ensure they have access to providers near the campus.
  • Students participating in a clinical rotation are responsible for ensuring they have non-emergency care in the location where they take their clinical rotation. If the student waives the SHIP at the start of the academic year, they may not voluntarily enroll in the plan at a later date. However, they may qualify for special enrollment rights if they move from their plan's service area for the clinical rotation spring semester. View the qualifying event enrollment form for additional details and deadlines.

Waiver forms may be reviewed, and if the plan does not meet the requirements, you will be notified that your waiver form has not been accepted.

Students required to waive must be logged into their Saint Joseph's University Portal to access the waiver form.
