Thomas Jefferson University
STUDENT HEALTH INSURANCE PLAN

2024-2025 Academic Year

Eligibility

All matriculated students who a) have any on-campus experience and/or b) have a clinical/internship are required to have and annually verify health insurance coverage (see exemptions below). Students required to have insurance are charged for the Jefferson Student Health Insurance Plan (Jefferson SHIP) at registration and must confirm enrollment or submit a waiver to opt out if they have another insurance plan that meets the Jefferson Health Insurance Requirements by the deadline. Students who do not enroll or waive by the deadline will be enrolled in the Jefferson SHIP retroactively to the policy effective date and responsible for the Jefferson SHIP premium. Students must actively attend classes for at least 31 days after the date for which coverage is purchased to remain eligible.

Exemptions: If the academic program is fully online and has no clinical/internship, if the academic program is in Continuing and Professional Studies (CPS), or if enrolled in a certificate program without a clinical/internship component then verification is not required and students are not eligible to purchase insurance through the university sponsored plan.

Insurance Costs, Coverage Periods, & Deadline Dates

Jefferson enrolls eligible fall students in annual coverage and charges 50% of the annual insurance cost in the fall and 50% in the spring.  Students must maintain eligibility for the plan to remain enrolled for spring coverage. Students who do not maintain spring eligibility will be removed from the plan as of January 1, 2025 and the insurance cost will be adjusted to the fall only premium.

Plan Highlights

The benefit information is located on the left side of this page. Jefferson has partnered with University Health Plans to administer the plan and help with waiver, enrollment, or eligibility related questions. University Health Plans can be reached at 833-207-7789 or info@univhealthplans.com. United Healthcare Student Resources can be reached at 800-767-0700 for any benefit or claim-related questions.

Waiver Process

Students with insurance that meets the Jefferson Health Insurance Requirements can opt-out of the Student Health Insurance Plan by completing the waiver form located on the left side of this page by the deadline. Before waiving, compare the cost, coverage, and benefits of the Plan to your existing plan. Students must be insured with an ACA (Affordable Care Act) compliant, filed, and approved policy in the U.S. Health insurance plans marketed solely to international students are often not filed and approved in the U.S., have limited benefits, provider networks and/or coverage periods that do not comply with Jefferson's waiver requirements. GBG Insurance, HDL Global Specialty, ISO, PGH (United), PSI, Student Medicover, and Tata AIG are examples of companies that do not meet the waiver requirements. Students may waive coverage under this plan if they are covered by a plan that meets all of the Jefferson Health Insurance Requirements.

Failure to complete the waiver will result in a student being enrolled and responsible for the Jefferson SHIP premium. Students who miss the annual waiver deadline are not permitted to waive spring coverage.

Enrollment Process

Students needing access to their health insurance coverage should confirm their enrollment in the Jefferson SHIP by completing the enrollment form located in the left-hand side navigation menu. Please allow up to 5 days after submitting the enrollment form for the student information to be active in the insurance company's database. Students who do not submit an enrollment form by the deadline will be enrolled in the Jefferson SHIP retroactively to the policy effective date and responsible for the Jefferson SHIP premium.

Dental Plan

The United Healthcare Student Resources Dental enrollment form (Basic or Enhanced), premium information, coverage periods, deadlines, complete description of benefits, and participating provider search can be found by selecting "Voluntary Dental Plan,” in the left-hand side navigation menu. Enrollment in this plan is open to all students attending Jefferson. The dental plan enrollment is voluntary and not based on enrollment in the Student Health Insurance Plan.

Vision Plan

The United Healthcare Student Resources vision enrollment form, premium information, coverage periods, deadlines, complete description of benefits, and participating provider search can be found by selecting "Voluntary Vision Plan,” in the left-hand side navigation menu. Enrollment in this plan is open to all students attending Jefferson. The vision plan enrollment is voluntary and not based on enrollment in the Student Health Insurance Plan.

Qualifying Event Enrollment

Students who waived the SHIP or did not enroll their dependents during their initial eligibility may qualify for special enrollment rights if they have one of the following life events. The deadline to submit the qualifying life event enrollment form is 30 days from the event date, and supporting documentation is required.

  • Loss of other coverage
  • No longer living in the prior plan's service area
  • Birth or adoption of a child
  • Marriage to the student
