Health Insurance Requirement

In keeping with its institutional responsibility to protect the health and well-being of the students, as well as meeting the requirements under New Jersey state law, Montclair State University requires all full-time undergraduate and graduate students to carry health insurance. Full-time students are automatically enrolled in the University-Sponsored Student Health Insurance Plan and charged for the insurance premium. Online-only students are not eligible for the insurance. Students are responsible for submitting a health insurance waiver online if they do not want/need the Student Health Insurance Plan.

The following students are required to have health insurance that meets University requirements:

  • Full-time undergraduate students enrolled in twelve (12) or more credits.
  • Full-time graduate students enrolled in nine (9) or more credits.
  • All International students regardless of credits.

Doctoral students completing their dissertations that wish to enroll in the University-sponsored Student Health Insurance Plan may petition by emailing Danisha Goodman at goodmand@montclair.edu. Please note that this petition will assess the student health insurance premium with the understanding that the student will remain enrolled in coverage until the policy termination date.

Plan Highlights

The Student Health Insurance Plan will continue to be provided by Aetna Student Health. The plan complies with the Affordable Care Act benefit requirements and includes access to Aetna's national PPO network of providers. Students do not have to select a primary care physician and referrals are not required. You can view the Plan Design and Benefit Summary located under Benefit Information in the left-hand side navigation menu. 

Montclair State University has partnered with University Health Plans to administer the plan and help with waiver, enrollment, or benefit-related questions. University Health Plans can be reached at 833-251-1705 or info@univhealthplans.com.

The deadline for waivers for NEW Spring 2025 students is February 24, 2025.

Waiver Process

Full-time students who wish to waive (opt-out) the Health Insurance:

  • If you wish to waive the Student Health Insurance Plan, you must provide proof of alternative coverage by completing the online waiver prior to the deadline date.
  • Copies of your insurance card submitted to the Office of Student Accounts or any other Montclair State University office (i.e. Health and Wellness Center, Athletics Department, etc.) do not constitute a waiver and are not acceptable.
  • Students who do not complete a waiver by the deadline date will be automatically enrolled in the plan for the full academic year and will be responsible for the full cost. The waiver form must be completed each academic year. Late waivers will not be accepted.

Enrollment Process

Full-time students who wish to enroll in the Health Insurance:

  • Students are encouraged to enroll in the health insurance as soon as possible so they may have access to coverage when the plan year begins. You may enroll by clicking on the enrollment form in the left-hand side navigation menu. 
  • If you confirm enrollment in the health insurance plan you are financially responsible for the full amount of the health insurance premium for the duration of the policy effective dates.

International Students

International students do not have access to the online enrollment form. International students are automatically enrolled prior to the waiver deadline date. If an international student has a plan that is filed and approved in the United States, typically approved plans are offered through a US employer or embassy, then the student must email University Health Plans to request the link to the international student waiver form. 

**Effective January 1, 2025, state or federal subsidized health insurance plans will no longer meet the University’s requirements for a health insurance waiver for international students on F-1 or J-1 visas.**

Please note, health insurance plans marketed solely to international students are often not filed and approved in the U.S., have limited benefits, provider networks, and/or coverage periods that do not comply with the Montclair insurance requirements. GBG Insurance, HDL Global Specialty, ISO, PGH (United), PSI, Student Medicover, and Tata AIG are examples of companies that do not meet the waiver requirements.

Early Termination (Not Permitted)

Montclair State University and Aetna Student Health DO NOT prorate health insurance premiums or adjust effective dates of coverage. Students will not be removed from SHIP coverage based upon graduation, withdrawal from the University, or new insurance plan post-waiver deadline. SHIP coverage will remain in effect until the end of the policy period.

Important Notes

Following Aetna requirements, the University reserves the right to make the final determination regarding eligibility for the initial and continued enrollment in this insurance plan.

The University reserves the right to audit all waivers in order to ensure compliance with the University's insurance requirements. Please be sure to have a copy of your insurance policy as you may be asked to provide documentation.

A valid health insurance card must be available when submitting the insurance waiver. Pending insurance coverage or a letter from your employer and/or a third company does NOT constitute as an accepted/submitted waiver.

Important Notice to Athletes: The Student Health Insurance Waiver process is NOT the same as providing an insurance card or information to the Athletics Department or the athletic trainers as part of the medical information required for participation in the student’s sport.

Disclaimer: If you withdraw from all/some courses on/or after the add/drop period it does not remove the health insurance premium. You will remain enrolled in the health insurance plan for the duration of the effective date. You will also be financially responsible for the full cost of the health insurance premium unless you have an approved waiver on file by the deadline date.

Qualifying Event

Students who waive the insurance in the fall may not enroll in the spring semester. Students who waive are only eligible to enroll if there is a Qualifying Life Event that causes them to lose other insurance. Please email info@univhealthplans.com to access the enrollment form within 31 days of the loss of coverage.
