Wake Forest University School of Medicine
STUDENT HEALTH INSURANCE PLAN
2025-2026 Academic Year
Wake Forest University School of Medicine (WFUSM) requires all students to have health insurance, and WFUSM offers a Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) at group rates for students and their families.
Students required to have health insurance will be automatically enrolled in SHIP and billed for the annual premium, which is divided into two payments. To opt out, students must submit a waiver form with proof of comparable coverage at the start of the academic year. After the waiver deadline, students can no longer opt out of the plan.
The SHIP is an ACA-compliant plan insured by Aetna and includes Aetna's National PPO network. Designating a primary care physician and requesting referrals is not required. Benefit Change for 2025-2026: A $100 per person deductible applies to all prescription drugs before the plan's cost share applies.

Students with comprehensive health insurance in North Carolina can waive enrollment in the SHIP by submitting a waiver form at the start of the academic year. Before opting out, compare the SHIP’s cost, coverage, benefits, and network with your current plan. Not all out-of-state plans will provide comprehensive benefits in North Carolina. If you do not submit the waiver form by the deadline, you will be automatically enrolled in the SHIP and responsible for the associated costs. A waiver form submitted at the start of the academic year applies to the full academic year.
Before opting out of the student health insurance plan, please check your plan to confirm their participation in Winston-Salem and/or Charlotte, NC. View this list of common plans accepted by Wake Forest Baptist. Due to the different physician groups and hospitals within the Wake Forest Baptist system, physician and hospital services are billed separately. Please remember that health insurance coverage varies, so some services may not be covered.
If you are enrolled in the Student Health Insurance Plan, you can also purchase coverage for eligible dependents. To do so, complete the enrollment form located in the navigation menu on the left side of this page. You will be required to make an online payment using a credit card. If you do not enroll your dependents by the deadline they cannot voluntarily enroll later unless they have a qualifying life event.
Once you waive the SHIP, you cannot voluntarily enroll. However, students who waived the SHIP may qualify for special enrollment rights if they incur an involuntary loss of other coverage or acquire a new dependent. To request an enrollment form and premium quote, contact University Health Plans at 800-437-6448 or info@univhealthplans.com. You must submit all qualifying event enrollment paperwork and documentation within 30 days of the qualifying event.
