Brown University
STUDENT HEALTH INSURANCE PLAN
2013-2014 Academic Year
Dear Student/Parent (s):
As you prepare for the 2013-14 academic year, we urge you to consider your health insurance coverage a top priority. It is important that students have access to comprehensive medical care while enrolled at Brown University. Therefore, all students are automatically enrolled in the University’s Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) for coverage effective August 15, 2013 - August 15, 2014. Each student’s account will be charged the $2,986 annual insurance premium.
The Student Health Insurance Plan is serviced by University Health Plans and underwritten by the Nationwide Life Insurance Company. Claims are paid by Consolidated Health Plans. The Prescription Drug Program is through Express Scripts. After a copayment of $15 for a thirty (30) day supply for generic drugs, $30 for a thirty (30) day supply for preferred brand name drugs, or $50 for a thirty (30) day supply for non-preferred brand name drugs, prescriptions will be covered at 100% (in network) up to the policy year plan maximum. Copayments do not apply to prescription generic contraceptive drugs.
Brown University Health Services and Psychological Services: On your tuition bill, you will be charged for both a Health Services Fee and a Health Insurance Fee. The Health Services Fee covers the cost of basic medical care at Health Services and Psychological Services. All students can access the services available through Health Services and Psychological Services. For a complete description of the services available, please go to www.brown.edu/health or www.brown.edu/Student_Services/Psychological_Services. The Health Insurance Fee is the premium for the Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP).
Before Waiving SHIP
If you are considering waiving Brown’s SHIP, please note that some insurance plans are restrictive and may leave students essentially uninsured while away at school. This could result in you incurring substantial out-of-pocket costs for medical care. In evaluating your plan, you must verify the following.
-
My plan provides comparable coverage that is accessible in the Providence area for:
-
Lab tests and x-rays
-
Prescription drugs
-
Hospitalization (including room & board, physicians’ fees and surgical expenses)
-
Outpatient hospital services
-
Mental health care
-
Emergency room care
-
Intercollegiate sports injuries (for those participating, your insurance coverage must meet the NCAA required minimum coverage amount of $90,000)
-
- My plan will cover me through August 15, 2014
- My plan does not have a high deductible that needs to be met before I am allowed to access coverage.
Brown’s Student Health Insurance Plan provides up to $1,000,000 in coverage per policy year.
Waiver Process: For students, participation in SHIP is mandatory unless you are enrolled in another comparable health insurance plan. If you choose to waive SHIP, you will need to provide proof of comparable coverage by logging onto www.universityhealthplans.com and submitting the on-line waiver form by June 1, 2013. A credit in the amount of the Health Insurance Fee will be posted to your student account when we receive the Waiver Form.
If you waive coverage, you can only enroll at a later date if you lose coverage under your current private health insurance plan due to a qualifying event. A qualifying event is a change in employment or marital status or reaching the age limit of your insurance plan. You can contact University Health Plans for further information.
Online Information: Please go to www.universityhealthplans.com or www.brown.edu/insurance to learn more about SHIP, to review questions to ask your current plan before waiving SHIP, to download a brochure or Frequently Asked Questions, to locate preferred providers or pharmacies, to enroll eligible dependents or waive coverage.
Delta Dental: A voluntary dental insurance program insured by Delta Dental of RI is also available. To access additional information and to enroll in the dental plan, log onto www.universityhealthplans.com, click on Brown University and then select the Dental Option.
Please take the time to make an informed decision regarding your health insurance needs while enrolled at Brown University. If you have any questions, please call the Insurance Office at 401-863-9481 or 401-863- 1703.
